Forensic Document Examinations

SOME DEFINITIONS

 

What is a Document? 

Any material containing marks, symbols or signs that convey a meaning or a message to someone. 

What is a Questioned Document?

Any document which is suspected of being fraudulent or whose source is unknown or background is disputed.  Any document wherein some issue has been raised or that is under scrutiny.  A document is usually questioned because of its origin, its content, or the circumstances and story regarding it production, all of which arouse suspicion as to it genuineness.

 

What is Handwriting Identification?

The scientific study of handwriting/handprinting characteristics to determine the authenticity of handwriting/handprinting.

 

What is Graphology?

The study of handwriting in a psychological perspective, not particularly concerned with the forensic examination of questioned documents.

 

What are Class Handwriting Characteristics?

Those elements of a handwriting system that are generally practiced by a large percentage of a populace as standard format in their writing.  These elements follow very closely the copybook form of writing taught in that system.

 

What are Individual Handwriting Characteristics?

Those features, elements and pen movements in a handwriting which are particular to one person.  These pen movements are unconscious pen impulse motions which consistently repeat themselves
